What are access logs?

An access log, also known as an access log or access log file, is a file that records details of every request made to a website. It is a type of log file that records events related to user requests and server responses.

On our cPanel formulas, access logs contain the following information:

  • The unique identifier of the request
  • The date and time of the request
  • The host name requested and the web page or resource requested, as well as the method used
  • The visitor's IP address
  • The status of the response (HTTP code)
  • User-Agent data (generally containing the user's web browser and operating system)
  • HTTP referrer (The referring website or search engine that directed the user to the URL)

Access logs can be used for a variety of purposes, including:

  • Analysing website traffic and understanding how users interact with the site
  • Identifying and resolving website problems, such as 404 errors and broken links
  • Track website performance over time
  • Identify malicious attempts to access the website
