How do I configure an email address in Mail on macOS?

Objective

This documentation explains how to configure an LWS email address in the Mail application on macOS so that you can send and receive email from your computer.

There are two possible methods:

• Automatic configuration: recommended if you want to quickly set up your email address, contacts and calendar.
• Manual configuration: useful if the automatic configuration doesn't work or if you just want to configure the mailbox.

Services concerned

This documentation is aimed at users with an LWS email address associated with :

• an LWS domain package
• a Mail Pro package
• managed hosting via LWS Panel
• managed hosting via Plesk
• managed hosting via cPanel

The configuration procedure on macOS remains the same regardless of the panel used.

Before getting started

Before configuring your email address on macOS Mail, make sure you have the following information:

• your full e-mail address: (example: contact@votredomaine.fr)
• the password for this e-mail address
• your e-mail connection settings
  • LWS Panel e-mail address
  • cPanel e-mail address

In most cases at LWS, the settings are :

Parameter	Value
Identifier	your full e-mail address
Password	address password
Incoming server (IMAP)	mail.yourdomain.ext
Outgoing server (SMTP)	mail.yourdomain.ext
IMAP port	993
POP port	995
SMTP port	465
Security	SSL/TLS

Replace yourdomain.ext with your real domain name.

Example:
if your e-mail is contact@monsite.fr
The server will be mail.monsite.fr

When configuring your account, macOS Mail may ask you to choose between IMAP and POP. Read our advice on how to make this choice.

Method 1: Automatic configuration of your email account

This method automatically sets up your email, contacts (CardDAV) and calendar (CalDAV).

Step 1: Download the configuration profile

1. Open your Internet browser.
2. Go to the following address: http://mail.votredomaine.ext (Replace yourdomain.ext with your domain name.)
3. Log in with your full email address and password.
   
4. Once connected, go to Settings (1), then Device Config (2), check that the device selection is set to "Apple" (3), and tick the Email, Caldav calendar and Carddav contact items (4).
   
5. Download the proposed profile (5).

Step 2: Install the profile on your macOS computer

1. Go to the System Preferences of the Apple device concerned.
   
2. Select the "Profiles" icon
   
3. Click on Install.
   
4. Enter the password for your email address. Entering your password is mandatory and not optional as indicated

The profile automatically configures :

• your Mail account
• your contacts
• your calendars

Step 3: Check the configuration

Open the Mail application on your computer.

Your account should automatically appear in the list of accounts.

You can now :

• send e-mails
• receive e-mails
• access your mail folders

If the automatic configuration doesn't work, use the manual configuration explained below.

Method 2: Manual configuration of your email address

Manual configuration allows you to enter your email settings yourself.

Step 1: Open the Mail application

1. Open the Mail application on your Apple computer.
   

2. If no account is configured, the add account wizard will appear automatically.

Otherwise :

1. Click Mail in the menu bar.
   

2. Click on Add an account.

Step 2: Choose the type of account

1. Select Other Mail account.
   

2. Click on Continue.

Step 3: Enter account information

Fill in the following information:

• Name: the name that will appear to your correspondents
• Email address: your full email address
• Password: the password for your e-mail address

Then click on Connect.

Step 4: Fill in the incoming and outgoing server settings

Select IMAP and fill in the following fields:

General information :

• Email address: your full email address
• Username: your full email address
• Password: the password for your e-mail address

Receiving server:

• Account type: IMAP
• Receiving server: mail.yourdomain.ext

For the outgoing server :

• SMTP server: mail.yourdomain.ext

Then click on Connect.

Step 5: Confirm configuration

Mail then checks the settings.

If everything is correct, your account is added.

You can choose which services to synchronise:

• Mail
• Notes (depending on system configuration)

Click on Finish.

Check that the configuration works

Once your account has been set up, we recommend that you carry out a test.

1. Send an email from your address to itself.

2. Check that :

• the message appears in the sent messages
• the message arrives in your inbox

3. Check that you can open your mail folders without error.

If these three points work, your configuration is correct.

Common problems and solutions

Password refused.

Check that :

• you are using the correct password for the email address
• you have entered the full email address as the username.

If necessary, change the password from your panel and then repeat the configuration.

I can receive emails but cannot send them

The problem is usually with the SMTP server.

1. Click on the"Mail" menu, then on"Settings".

2. Click on the"Accounts" icon, then select the account you want to change.

3. In the"Server settings" tab, under"Sending server (SMTP)", uncheck the"manage automatically" box and check the following settings:

• SMTP server: mail.yourdomain.ext
• Port: 587
• Security: SSL/TLS enabled
• Authentication enabled
• User name: full email address

After making the changes, try sending an email again.

I'm not receiving my emails

The problem is usually with the IMAP server.

1. Click on the"Mail" menu, then on"Settings".

2. Click on the"Accounts" icon, then select the account you want to change.

3. In the"Server settings" tab, under"Inbox server (IMAP)", uncheck the"manage automatically" box and check the following settings:

Check the incoming server settings:

• Account type: IMAP
• Port: 993
• Security: SSL/TLS enabled
• Server: mail.yourdomain.ext
• User name: full email address
• Correct password

An error appears during automatic configuration

In this case :

1. Delete the installed profile.
2. Delete the existing Mail account.
3. Repeat the configuration using the manual method.

The account already exists in Mail

If an account was previously configured with the wrong settings :

1. Delete the account in Settings > Internet Accounts
2. Add it again with the correct settings.
